Some highlights in the history of Atonement Lutheran School:

When much of the Florissant area was still covered by farms and corn fields, the Lutheran Church of the Atonement began its Gospel ministry as a congregation in 1951.  Providing a quality, Christian education for their children was a high priority.  They established a school in May, 1956, with the building of its first education center.  The school began with a Kindergarten through Grade 4.  Subsequent grade levels were added over the first four years.  Enrollment quickly grew with the population boom.  The congregation built a second education center which was dedicated in September 1960 to accommodate its Kindergarten through Grade 8 program.   The Pre-Kindergarten was established in 1975.  A childcare program was added later in the 1980s.  The school’s purpose has remained essentially the same since its inception, but its role has expanded to include that of community outreach which offers the same high quality, Christian-based education to all children from the community.

The congregation’s commitment to the Gospel ministry and Christian education continued with a major, three-phase building program.  The first project of this building program was completed in March, 1996.  It provided a new, full-size gymnasium, a child care center, and youth ministry room.  The second project, during the summer of 2003, was construction of a new classroom wing for grades 5 through 8, a special education classroom, and full renovation of the primary grade classroom wing.  Although the start of the next school year was delayed a few weeks, the building was completed in record time.  It was dedicated in September.   A new ministry center was the third project completed and ready for operation in January, 2009.  The ministry center included a new media and technology center, new church and school offices, a multi-purpose room, and a new church reception area.

Atonement is recognized in our community as a leading non-public school known for its excellence in Christian education.  The school’s professional and support staff consists of 38 faculty and staff members.  They are assisted by scores of parent and congregation volunteers.  The result is a nurturing, faith-based learning environment for the children.  The education program and services have expanded and developed over recent years which include a full-time special education teacher, speech pathologist, full-time school nurse, school counselor, technology teacher and other specialty teachers for P.E., music, and Spanish.   Ongoing curricular and co-curricular development continues to keep Atonement current with instructional resources and technology, and sports programs for volleyball, soccer, basketball, cheerleading, and track. The school is accredited through the Missouri Nonpublic Schools Accrediting Association.   Student enrollment has grown to an average of 265 students Preschool 3s through Grade 8 who come from over ten public school districts in the St. Louis North County metro area.
