This program started in 1986 to meet the need of the school’s families to provide quality care of the children during the school year while parents were at work. The program ran from early morning to late afternoon. Late Atonement added summer program. Now we provides year-round care for the children. The Child Care Center operates daily from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. following the school calendar. Parents can drop off children on their way to work and then pick them up on the way back home. Parents don’t have to worry about the children since the children are in a safe, nurturing, Christian environment. It is available to all families enrolled in the school. The child care program, an extension of ALS’s Christian education ministry, shares the mission, purpose, philosophy, and policies of the school.
The activities provide reinforcement and development of readiness skills for our preschool and kindergarten students. It promotes development of self-discipline, respect, cooperative learning, confidence, and independence. A before and after-school program allows older students choices of activities. There are rooms for homework, art projects, computers, or the students may use the playground and gym. A summer program includes weekly themes and activities. The programs include a variety of educational and fun presentations brought to the children on campus. Summer presentations have included Mr. Saxophone, Mad Science, St. Louis Zoo, Cindy’s Petting Zoo, Red Cross, Fire Department, Water Safety and Rescue, Butterfly House, Magic House, St. Louis Science Center, and sports camps.
As a part of the school’s Christian education program, child care students benefit from access to all of the school’s resources that include a full-time nurse on campus during the school day, vision and hearing screening, use of a full-size gymnasium, a large playground which is safe from street access, a school hot lunch program, our technology resources, special school-wide events, and safety prevention and health programs.
